Delft Solar Boat christened

23 Jun 2008

On Wednesday 28 May, a new solar-powered boat built by a team of TU Delft students was officially unveiled in Amsterdam by Georgina Verbaan. The boat represents the collective efforts of seven TU Delft students who hope to pilot their craft to victory in the upcoming Frisian Solar Challenge.

During the construction of the boat, the students received advice and guidance from Wubbo Ockels, ambassador for the Frisian Solar Campaign. The race, which follows the same route as the Dutch Elfstedentocht ice-skating marathon, will begin in Leeuwarden on Monday 23 June and will cover a distance of roughly 200km. More than fifty teams from the Netherlands and abroad are to take part. TU Delft’s entry is more than six metres long, with a draft of 60 cm and a top speed of 30 km per hour. It is fitted with a total of 8 m2  of solar panels.
