01 Jul 2008

The Delta Lloyd Solar Boat manned by seven Delft students won the Frisian Solar Challenge for solar-powered boats on Saturday 28 June 2008. Despite battery problems, the team were able to maintain their lead until they were over the finishing line. The team had won all six stages since the previous Monday, passing through eleven Frisian towns.

The Delft students covered the distance of over 200 kilometres in 12 hours, 5 minutes and 47 seconds. The team participated in the C class, which was the class for teams that provided their own solar panels, with a maximum surface area of 8 m2. Gowrings Continental BV finished in second place with a time of 15 hours and 19 minutes.

Compared to 2006 when the Frisian solar boat race was last held, the participants were much faster. Then, the Delft team also finished first but took almost sixteen hours to finish.
