Dutch culture and language

“The rest of the world is a big place”, say the Dutch, well aware of how small their country is. Although small in size, Holland has a rich cultural tradition.

For centuries the country has had an attitude of openness towards the rest of the world. In business, but also in social life. In addition, the Dutch language is spoken in many places around the world.

In the sections in the navigation menu on the left, you can find some information about Holland and the Dutch. It may help you at times when you find yourself thinking about things that you take for granted at home. For example, finding a place to live, taking out insurance, finding out whether you’re allowed to work, and getting used to a different currency.

Food

Dutch cuisine is not exactly world famous. The Dutch themselves do not have a tradition of fine cooking, and hot meals are limited to one a day, traditionally in the evening.

Student life

Higher Education Institutions are spread throughout the country. However, only some of them have campuses, and the buildings of a single university might even be scattered throughout a city.

Although many Dutch people speak English very well, you may want to learn some Dutch as a part of your Study in Holland experience.

Getting Around

Holland is a small country. You do not really need a car to get around. Public transport will take you almost anywhere you want to go.

Holland is more varied than you might expect. There is plenty to see, whether you’re strolling through town, making a boat trip on the canals or lakes, lazing on the beach or walking in the woods and dunes.

Religion

Holland has a huge religious diversity: you will find churches, mosques, synagogues and Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh places of worship.

Holland is a safe country by international standards, with low levels of violence and street crime.
