Other insurances
There are several insurances which are useful for you to have during your stay in the Netherlands. We particularly recommend you take out a liability insurance.
Liability insurance
If you cause an accident and someone is injured or if you damage someone's property, you are responsible for paying all the costs arising from the accident. You might, for example, break something where you are working or studying, or cause damage to your rented room.
The resulting claim for damages could be very expensive. You are therefore strongly urged to take out a good liability insurance. You can organise this either in your own country or through your host institution in the Netherlands.
In addition, you may be held responsible for damage caused during professional activities. People who work in the health sector, for example, can be sued if something goes wrong.
In the Netherlands, damage caused on the job is usually covered by the employer's liability insurance. Student interns enjoy the same cover as regular employees.
To be certain, however, please check with the company or organization you'll be working for to make sure that you are covered under their liability insurance.
Repatriation insurance
We also strongly recommend you take out a repatriation insurance. This means that if you become seriously ill or die, a relative can come to the Netherlands to take you back home.
Household and luggage insurance
Insurance to cover undoings to your possessions. For example, if your possessions get stolen or destroyed through water or fire damage the insurance will cover the costs. It is important to check the cover provided.
Travel insurance
Insurance that covers your belongings and your healthcare when you are traveling.
Insurance packages
There are several insurance companies that provide an insurance package including most or all of the abovementioned insurances.
